Captive Material Histories of Indigenous Dance: Ethnological Museums, Repatriation Efforts, and the field of Dance Studies
"In this talk, I draw from experiences researching and writing about collections at the MARKK Museum in Hamburg and the Ethnological Museum of Berlin in two projects conducted as collaborations between European-based researchers and curators and Indigenous leaders and scholars. I will consider the relevance of Indigenous repatriation efforts, ‘ethnological’ concepts of Indigenous material history, and the European history of museum object accumulation to the topic of dance and decolonisation. I will address, as well, the ways that the ‘material history of dance’ might emerge as a problematised concept in the case that the pillaged objects of Indigenous danced and ceremonial practices are included.”
