Volunteer With Us
Dancing with Decolonisation is a yearly online conference that is focused on providing community, connections, and education for free around the topic of dance and decoloniality from a variety of different perspectives. The conference generally happens at the end of July or beginning of August. The conference board works in both English and Spanish, with some members only speaking one language. The organising team itself works as a mentorship, where long-serving members will train and work alongside new volunteers to help train and understand the work being done.
There are 4 central roles within the organisation:
-
Oversight - Works on administrative planning, meetings and notes, speaker scheduling, and helping with other parts of the organisation when needed.
-
Outreach - Promotes the Call for Proposals and Registration for DwD and deals with internal communications with registrants and speakers.
-
Communications - Works on external communications such as our newsletter, website, and social media platforms.
-
Support - Works on financial planning, organisational structure, and partnerships.
-
(There may be a 5th editorial role which we will be discussing over the next few months as well).
There are 4 primary technologies we use as a team.
-
Slack - Team communications
-
Wix - Website
-
Google Suite - Mail and document storage
-
Zoom - Meetings and conference recordings
As a team, we will have 8 meetings throughout the year. Volunteers are required to attend at least three of these meetings between October 2024 - May 2025. We will additionally have 4 team meetings specifically in Spanish to find out how we may better integrate Spanish speakers into working comfortably in a primarily English language space. Attendance in these counts towards team meetings.
There is an expectation of active communication and participation with the team. This includes actively checking the team slack at least twice a week for updates, whether or not you receive a notification of new messages, and responding to requests for information. It also means communicating when you don't have time or need to step away from planning or team work for self care purposes.
We are also looking for active engagement with tasks through the year. This means volunteering yourself for work and being willing to learn new skills.
If you would still like to volunteer, please contact us by email noting which of the 4 roles you are interested in working with the most (you are welcome to name more than one). We will be having a meeting in Spanish next week to respond to questions, but you may also respond to this email with any questions you may have.
